History and Original Purpose of Cockapoo

Back in the day, both the Cocker Spaniel and Poodle were bred to be hunting dogs. However, there is no record of the first breed of Cockapoo, and most people assumed that it started back in the 1950s. What we can share with you, though, are the histories of its parents.

Poodles came from the French and German border back in the 15th and 16th centuries. The breed was associated with the higher class, and you could even see it from their portraits. As the years go by, it became more popular because of its unique and lovable appearance.

Cocker Spaniels, on the other hand, came to the US in the 17th century. It was in the 1930s and 1940s when it became a big hit among many pet owners.

Going back to our mixed breed, you can call it using other names as well. It can be Cockapoodle, Cockapoo, Cocker Spaniel Poodle mix, Spoodle, Cocker Poodle, Cock-a-poo, and Cock-a-doodle.

Physical Characteristics of Cockapoo Poodle Mixes

A Cockapoo has an adorable look, and you could compare it to a teddy bear. They are categorized as medium-sized dogs, but you can see smaller breeds depending on their parents.

The breed is well-proportioned, making them sturdy and athletic. They have round heads, and their eyes are brown with a black nose. If they have a brown nose, their eyes should be black. And if their nose has a lighter color, expect that their eyes would be hazel or green. With their ears hanging down, it added to the dog’s already oozing charm.

The Cockapoo Poodle mixes could weigh between 10 – 30 pounds, depending on the parent dog. And it could go as high as 15 inches. They could also live for around 18 years.

It doesn’t matter if you live in a hot or cold location. A Cockapoodle will thrive in both conditions.

Temperament, Cockapoo Poodle Mixes

As we’ve already mentioned, Cockapoos are energetic. They love the outdoors so they could play and go around. If you want a hiking or running partner, we recommend getting this breed. In addition, they enjoy swimming and playing fetch.

They are also an intelligent breed, and you can easily train them. However, you still need to be cautious as being a hunter remains in their blood, and they might get too excited when you take them out. The best solution is to train and socialize them as early as possible. This can also fix their aggression.

Coat, Cockapoo Poodle Mixes

With Cockapoo, they could have different types of coats. It could be tight and curly, medium curl, or flat. They are also low-shedding because of the Poodle parent. And even if they are not hypoallergenic, it’s still a good choice for people with allergies.

Bear in mind that no dog is 100% hypoallergenic. If you are to buy one and the seller claims that the dog is, don’t believe them.

Cockapoos come in different colors. It could be solid, phantom, or even tri-color. You can find breeds that are apricot, red, black, tan, merle, sable, and brown, among many others.

Common Health Concerns

An advantage of having a Cockapoo is that they have lesser health issues. Yet again, this doesn’t mean they are invincible. They can still get sick, and here are a few illnesses you have to watch out for.

Patellar Luxation

This is a condition that your dog might get from their Poodle parent. It’s prevalent when the patella is unaligned, and this could cause lameness in the leg.

Progressive Retinal Atrophy

This is an eye disorder that may cause blindness due to the loss of photoreceptors that are found at the back of the eye. Take note that this disease is quite common from their parent breeds.

Von Willebrand’s Disease

It’s a blood clotting disorder that may cause excessive bleeding. Make sure that your dog has been tested for this disease.

Heart Valve Disease

When the breed gets older, it may develop leaky heart valves wherein the blood flows ‘backward’, making the heart less efficient. Medications may extend the dog’s life. But unfortunately, operations for repairing heart valves are not yet common.

A Cockapoodle is prone to having epilepsy. Fortunately, these can be treated with the proper medication.

Proper Diet for Cockapoos

A Cockapoo requires around 600 calories every day. And as a standard practice, you must check the back of your puppy’s food packet to know the amount of food to feed. Normally, this should be according to their weight. In addition, you must give your dog high-quality food. We know that it can be tempting to get the cheaper ones. But that can affect their overall health, and you’d end up paying more for vets.

For dogs, you can split their meals at least two times a day. But for puppies, it could be divided into three meals.

Grooming Cockapoos

This breed has a high need for regular grooming, and you should do it every day. It might be best to just keep their fur short to avoid matting. A good option is to trim it to two to three inches in length. Don’t forget to cut the hair around the eyes to ensure proper visibility.

In addition, your dog might be prone to ear infections, so you need to make sure that it is always clean. This should be done every week. You can wipe out the parts of the ear that you can see. Use a cotton ball with a solution recommended by your veterinarian. Never stick cotton swabs into the ear as that could cause damages. If there’s an odd smell coming out from your pet’s ear, or if it looks tender, or if it shakes his head often, these could be signs of an ear infection.

Their teeth are apparently important as well. Make sure to brush their teeth at least twice or thrice per week.

Right Exercise for Cockapoo Poodle Mixes

You should give your dog at least 90 minutes of exercise time every day. This could be split into two 45-minute walks. They can easily get bored, so you must ensure that you are committed enough to play or spend time with them. It’s best to use a leash whenever you are in a public space due to their hunting nature.

Training Your Cockapoo

When you train your puppy, you need to use positive reinforcement or reward-based training. This means whenever they accomplish even the smallest tasks, you give them treats or verbal praises. Take note that this breed can quickly get anxious and fearful when not trained.

Pros of Having a Cockapoo

There are a lot of advantages when you own a Cockapoo. For one, they are loyal and loving. We can guarantee that your pet will wash away your stress every single time. Another good thing about having this type of breed is that they are low shedding. You won’t have to vacuum your house compared to when you own other types of dogs. Lastly, they are easy to train, considering that they are clever.

Cons of Having a Cockapoo

There are a few cons to owning this dog. And you need to consider these before you even get one for yourself. While generally a good pet, the need to have lots of exercises and mental stimulation. This essentially means you are compelled to play with them every day.

Since they are a high-maintenance breed, you should be financially capable of providing them what they need. Don’t forget that Cockapoos love to bark, and this may cause issues with your neighbor. But the good thing is that you can train them when they are still puppies.

Where to Get Your Cockapoo

As always, we recommend that you get your Cockapoo from a reputable breeder. From there, you can be sure that the puppy is healthy and, oftentimes, show-quality. If you must know, breeders are passionate and dedicated to get the best dogs every single time. They choose healthy parents and even check their attributes.

Also, credible breeders may allow you to return the puppies if you feel that they are not suitable for your environment. In a nutshell, it’s always safe to get from genuine breeders.

How Much are Cockapoo Poodle Mixes?

If you plan to get your own Cockapoo, you need to understand that this is a designer dog. Plus, they can be challenging to breed. This means, it could get expensive. A Cockapoo could cost you between $800 to $2000.

Should You Get a Cockapoo From Shelters?

If you are working on a budget, getting your dog from shelters is a good idea too. This can also cut down your cost of owning a pet as chances are they are already adults. This means they may have already gone training or have been vaccinated while young.

But of course, this does not guarantee that you will get the best breeds. If you know an expert or a vet, you can simply ask them what to look for when choosing a dog.

Avoid Puppy Farms

These are also known as puppy mills. More often than not, they have the worst conditions when breeding Cockapoodles, and they do it for profit alone. We discourage you from getting your dogs here.

Well-Known Celebrities Who Own Cockapoos

Even high-profile celebrities couldn’t resist the charms of Cockapoos. Harry Styles, Minka Kelly, Lady Gaga, and Ashley Judd are spotted carrying their lovely Cockapoo Poodle mixes. Their resemblance to a teddy bear is to die for, and we will not be surprised if you get one for yourself too.

Conclusion, Cockapoo Poodle Mixes

When you have a Cockapoo, expect that they are highly sociable. They need human contact to help them stay calm. If you don’t spend enough time with them, there’s a huge possibility that they will be unpredictable and disobedient.

Before even owning one, ensure that you have plotted your schedule accordingly. You need to spend time playing with them so they could reach their optimal health. It’s a good family dog, even if you have small children. But remember that because of their innate aggression, you must monitor their actions and behaviors while playing with your young ones.
